Bottom line

AEYE-DS has prospective FDA-reviewed evidence supporting autonomous detection of more-than-mild diabetic retinopathy with a defined camera and workflow. Broader confidence depends on real-world imageability, referral completion, hardware configuration, equity, and post-update performance.

Based on public sources. RIR did not independently test this product. This is not an endorsement or recommendation.

What the evidence supports

Reviewed sources establish an authorized autonomous diabetic retinopathy screening product for defined cameras and patients.

What remains uncertain

Independent local evidence on imageability, subgroup performance, referral completion, and long-term outcomes remains needed.

How it was studied

The FDA 510(k) summary states that AEYE-DS version 5.00 was tested in a prospective, multicenter, single-arm, blinded pivotal study. Novice operators captured retinal images, and patient-level output was compared with the study reference assessment.

Intended use
Automatically detect more-than-mild diabetic retinopathy in eligible adults with diabetes at the point of care.
Represented version
FDA-cleared AEYE-DS system; supported camera configuration requires confirmation
Regulatory context
AEYE-DS is FDA-cleared for defined use with specified Topcon and Optomed camera configurations.

Evidence source base

FDA-reviewed developer-sponsored pivotal evidence and official product materials.

Important limitation

Pivotal diagnostic performance does not establish referral completion, performance with every camera or operator, equity, long-term outcomes, or continued performance after version changes.

Questions to ask

  1. 01Which camera and software version are deployed?
  2. 02What is the local ungradable-image rate?
  3. 03How reliably do positive screens lead to eye care?
